Special Topics in Adult Education: Classroom Diversity


Description
In this course, we are going to focus on the following strategies by helping all adult learners succeed in our classrooms.

Instructional Goal: In a six-hour course, teachers will develop a repertoire of classroom skills that will engage their students from diverse backgrounds.

Instructional objectives: To achieve this goal, teachers
• will assess and identify their own biases and cultural proficiency;
• analyze course materials and tests for indications of bias;
• describe and discuss teaching strategies and skills that meet the needs of various populations, including language sensitivity;
• characterize the steps in the Cultural Proficiency Continuum;
• define terms such as implicit and explicit bias and field dependence and field independence;
• list some of the legal issues that face public and private institutions regarding discrimination;
• analyze various case studies and propose strategies to mitigate the problems described in those case studies.
